Extramural Electives Policy

The Extramural Electives Policy for the DDS Program aims to facilitate enriching educational
experiences beyond traditional classroom settings. These electives provide students with
opportunities to develop practical skills, expand clinical exposure, and enhance professional
growth in dentistry.
Table of Content:
Eligibility:
- All DDS students in good academic standing are eligible for extramural electives.
- Students must have completed prerequisite coursework and clinical training as outlined
in the program curriculum.
- Students should have passed all prior semesters to attending extramural electives
- Students who fulfill required coursework in a particular discipline can request additional
extramural electives in the same discipline.

Approval Process:
- Students may pursue extramural electives at non-affiliated institutions during the clinical
years, subject to oversight and final approval by NUSOD for academic credit.
- Applications must be submitted through the designated platform provided by NUSOD at
least 3 months before the elective start date, including a comprehensive course description
and syllabus.
- Electives must occur in safe academic or clinical environments, ensuring adequate
supervision, access to emergency care, and adherence to ethical standards endorsed by
NUSOD.

Application Requirements:
Each application must include:
- Proposed elective site or program
- Duration and timing of the elective
- Learning objectives and goals
- Faculty mentor or preceptor information (if applicable)
- Additional program-specific requirements

Approval and Opportunities:
- The Program Coordinator or designated faculty member will review applications based on
educational relevance, resource availability, and alignment with program objectives.
- Approved opportunities may include clinical rotations, research projects, public health
initiatives, dental association membership or international dental missions (subject to
additional safety considerations). aren’t we encouraging sports, music and arts for
students
- Students are encouraged to seek approval well in advance to facilitate proper planning.

Credit, Evaluation, and Assessment:
- Extramural electives may earn academic credit based on program guidelines and
evaluation criteria.
- Evaluation criteria may include assignments, preceptor assessments, reflective reports,
achievement of learning objectives, and student feedback through the Extramural Course
Evaluation.
- Faculty evaluations must be submitted directly to NUSOD using the prescribed Student
Evaluation Form.
- Students must complete an Extramural Course Evaluation to provide feedback for ongoing
improvement.

Financial Considerations:
- Students are responsible for associated costs such as travel, lodging, and materials.

- Students must maintain appropriate liability insurance coverage as required.
- Waivers or agreements outlining responsibilities and risks may be required by the
program or elective site.

- Students must adhere to program policies and submit required documentation for
recordkeeping.
- Completed extramural electives, evaluations, and certificates must be submitted to the
Dean.
